Domain Names   - Help Index

The following information is related to Ip Addresses, Ports, Domain names, LocalHost and Virtual Paths. It may sound complicated but it really isn't.

IP Addresses These are Internet addresses that identify every computer on the Internet uniquely, very much like telephone numbers. This enables everything to talk to everything else without getting lines crossed. If you dial up to your Internet service provider then your are assigned a "dynamic" ip address, most likely. These addresses change every time you dial up and remain the same for the duration of your dialed up session. If you have DSL, Cable or even a Satellite connection you may have a "static" ip address, which is one that does not change. An Ip Address looks like a telephone number it has 4 sections of up to 3 digits each, eg. 147.23.139.244.

Ports Many kinds of data comes in and goes out on your IP address connection, web pages, e-mail, personal messaging, etc. Each type of data talks on what is called different port. This eliminates the problem of which application on your computer the data belongs to. There are many ports for each ipaddress and many of the ports are assigned to a specific task, for instance, web services is assigned port 80. It might help to think of it like your IP address is your telephone number and ports are like distinctive ring where you can have multiple types of calls on the same phone line. So your fax machine can answer one kind of call and your handset another.

Domain Names A Domain name is really a name that stands for an IP address. You might recognize these names as something like www.rensoft.com.
The domain name is identified by sections separated by a ".". The first part is the ".com" call the First Level domain, the second part is "renasoft" called the Second Level domain and the third part is "www" called the third level domain.

These domain names are purchased from Domain Name Service (DNS) providers. Domain Name Service providers do more than just sell the names they map that name to the IP address where your server is located. (see ipaddreses above). So (simply put) when a person enters www.yourdomain.com in their web browser, the browser go's out to the Internet and asks what ip address that domain name is mapped to. The service provider returns your IP address and the Browser then uses that IP address to request your web pages. You specify your WebDomain as your domain name. eg. "www.mydomain.com". You can run multiple web sites using one domain name. By changing the third level domain name "www" to something else like "business". So you could define a new web site like WebDomain business.mydomain.com and the WebFolder as the path to that web site. In fact you don't even need the domain name if you know the IP address. LocalHost Is a name (internally) used by your computer to identify itself. So in your browser you and type "http://localhost" and if your running a web server it should respond with your web page.

Virtual Paths are normally used when you want to run multiple web sites and you don't have a domain name. You can code a domain name that begins with a "~". For instance you can have a Webdomain of ~business and have it mapped to a WebFolder of "c:\NetJet_Server\Forums_Business". The url to access this web site would be "http://localhost/~business"

Why you may not need a domain name.

The fact that you don't need a domain name is very useful and can save you money.

We have many portals sites, such as PeopleNexus.com, Businesspark.com, SociallyConnected.com, Clublinks.org, FamilyBonds.ws, ahez.com, aaez.com and many others. See our Complete Portal Site list at ahez.com Since you can run many web sites from your web server using our Personal Site software you may need to register them on different Portal Sites. This, as you can see, could save you lots of money because you don't need a domain name for each of them.

Our portal sites are sites where you can go and put in information about your site so others can get to your site. These portals are specifically for that purpose. On these portal sites you can choose to put in a Member Id and Code and optional advertising information about your site in the sites Global Directory. When people come to the portal site they can get to your web site through a direct link or by entering the Member ID and code you specified.

So (for instance) you could have a family web site for your family only and you could go to http://www.myfamilybonds.com and register there (it's free). Then give out your Member id and Code id to your family or whom ever. Then they can go to http://www.myfamilybonds.com and enter that information and be directed to your web site automatically.

You could have a business, club or forums site where you adversite your site on our related portals and when people visit the portals they would be able to see your advertisement and click on the link and go directly to your site.
